So...yeah, I've been fighting a horrible fever for the past week, in between updates, so I apologize for not answering any comments. I've mainly been concerned with actually getting content up on the blog as it catches my attention. I promise I'll answer everybody, just...not for a couple of days. I'm still really, really sick. I'm at that point of exhausted-from-being-sick where typing anything more than the bare minimum is kind of a huge chore.

The Batman: Year One review is coming along, but for such a short movie, it sure was a lot to chew on--especially considering I'm doing a dual review with [livejournal.com profile] about_faces, my counterpart for all things Two-Face. I really wanted to get the review done before the DVD actually hits shelves, since that's what I should do, because I got an advance copy and should therefore totally scoop everybody else, but eh, the flu, what can you do?

So, Catwoman news:

Arkham City, like many video games of its kind, has numerous alternate skins for the playable characters. Batman has several, Robin has several, and Catwoman has three--that we know of thus far. There's the standard zip-up suit with the goggles, and then...

On the left, we have the purple suit as drawn by Tim Sale in The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Catwoman: When in Rome, and on the right, we have the gray suit from Batman: The Animated Series.

(I've seen the purple costume mistakenly referred to as the 'Year One' costume and it just makes my eyes cross, I tell you. It was gray, people, gray!)

I really, really look forward to playing with TAS Catwoman, and finding out whether or not there are any other skins available to unlock. Additionally, I really looking forward to seeing whether or not these pictures do each version of the character justice.

Also, is it just me, or do each of their physiques look fairly different? I mean, considering how--let's say--'well endowed' the zip-up suit Catwoman is in every piece of game footage we see, these two skins look tame and tiny in comparison. I'd be impressed if the Tim Sale version followed his style of musculature (as I think it does, given the way her collar bone looks), and if the TAS version was in keeping with the sleek curves of the animated series. That's way cooler than, say, an unlockable schoolgirl outfit, BloodRayne2Iamlookingatyouverysternly.

While, as far as I know, none of the villains will be playable, it'll be interesting to see if any of them get different costume options at any point in the game. If not, I'll still keep my eyes peeled for rejected concept art, because that's one of my favorite things omg.

Quick question, guys: given the opportunity to play as any Batman universe character, which of their costumes would you prefer to have access to? Would you play as question mark jacket Riddler? Unscarred Harvey Dent? Killing Joke Joker?

Harvey, obviously. He'll be the Action Attorney, dispensing two-fisted writs of justice! But secondly, I want a Hugo Strange Batman. I want to play the entire game as Hugo as Batman, dammit! Mask off, ideally, but mask on with beard would work too. From what I've seen, we might possibly see that in the game itself. Here's hoping.

I also want classic Silver Age Dick Sprang costumes across the board. If I could reskin the entire set with bright colors and oversized novelty objects too, you bet I would. OOH, I also want an Adam West skin set. Romero Joker! Gorshin Riddler! Meredith Pengers! I'm not sure which Mr. Freeze, though. Otto Preminger, probably. Of course, one would have to design their own prospective Clint Eastwood Two-Face, which I really should keep in mind for a future art commission...

Having played Blood Rayne 2, I found the school girl costume to be rather... strange to include in the game. I much preferred the all Goth alt costume she has and the metal armour one was pretty cool.

I love those two new skins. The first one gives Catwoman some much needed muscle, which I imagine she would have, what with her fighting style and the type of life she leads. And the TAS Catwoman looks great! It look like a faithful 3D translation of the cartoon. Plus, in both alt skins, it's nice not to see someone with boobs bigger than her head.

I'd prefer to play as Nightwing, but after the disco era collar.

Graham Nolan's Ponytail!Joker. Preferably in the top hat and tails.

"The Batman" Riddler. For sheer WTFkery. Alex Ross' Riddler would be a close second - the whole "gown" thing is something that I'd like to see in action.

And maybe Kia Asamiya's Riddler. It's quite possibly my favorite Eddie design of all time (for some reason, I always envision him as blonde).

Maybe Red Hood Joker? TAS Hatter? Classic Black Mask? Captain Felina, Leathering, and the Laughing Man? Nolan!Squishy? Zsasz as originally designed by Breyfogle? Come to think of it, Schmacher's Ivy was actually (for me) something of a turn-on.

Or, if we're going the "Every reaction means we're doing something right! Even if it's negative!" angle: "Riddle Me That" Eddie. Mohawk!Eddie. Scarebeast.

Oh, and Teh Batman's Penguin would be AWESOME as a playable character. For extra points, have him start doing the Spongebob voice as a taunt.

The last thing i would want to see is a 3d translation of tim sale's awful approach to musculature.

The action figure of his Catwoman was bad enough. Not to mention his Two-Face. *shudder*

...would you both like some hand sanitizer for the Tim Sale art-cooties? Or should I just break out the playground circle-circle-dot-dot-cootie-shot?

I actually like how he draws both Harvey and Two-Face (in faces, anyway: he looks like he's always drowning in that double-breasted suit that Sale draws, which seems to be made of heavy-duty curtain fabric), but god, I hate how it translated into action figure form. That's like a grotesque version of Tommy Lee Jones.

You are right in that Catwoman on the right does look younger. I think it may be due in part to the skin tones used on the models, as the right was an adaptation of TAS Catwoman, and they'd want to try and emulate it as much as possible.

No its not just that it's:

the eye shape
lip shape
the curve of where their shoulders meet their necks
and their boobs

I'm a bit of a newbie what does TAS stand for?

TAS is Batman: The Animated Series! And if you tell me you haven't seen it, be prepared for us to offer rabid competitive lists of which episodes to watch!

CASS CAIN. I would love to scare the crap out of criminals as Cass Cain. It'd be fantastic. And I can only imagine what these designers would do with the system for her abilities.

and on teenage superheroes, can you imagine what fun Misfit would be? :D

And I think I've seen this bounced around a few boards, but Jim Gordon would be great, too. Especially as a contrast to Batman's way of doing things. Although maybe you'd want Huntress more for that.

As to villains...I think a competent Harley would be really, really fun to play. Especially if they occasionally went into Harleyvision.

Of course you already know I'd want to play as the superior suit-and-bowler Riddler.

I love the cut of the TAS mask. It's the only one that gives her face a really feline look. But if I had the choice of any Catwoman costume to use in this game, I would go with the green with the silly boots.

Business-suit-and-bowler Riddler - the TAS version, not the Gorshin version (which is also great).

This is the back-up account for what I hope will be the Ultimate Catwoman Fan Blog--Dr. Von Fangirl on LiveJournal. You should go check it out over there. I much prefer the original article.
