As I reported just a couple of weeks ago, GameStop is putting out a limited edition strategy guide for Batman: Arkham City, with two variant covers: one of Batman, one of Catwoman.

Those hit the internet yesterday, but I was so caught up in other Catwoman news, I didn't get to post about them.

Ah. I see Catwoman still has an ass. I'm so glad to be reminded, as I'd forgotten since the last twelve times Arkham City forcibly reminded me.

(Although, to be fair to Arkham City, it's not as bad as the comic book series I'm currently slogging through, Glory by Catwoman alum Jo Duffy and 90's superstar artist Mike Deodato--wherein, despite its excellent writing, I am reminded that the heroine has a costume with a thong every three panels. I GET IT. SHE HAS AN ASS. I HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN IN THE LAST TEN SECONDS. I PROMISE I BELIEVE YOU. CAN I GO BACK TO READING THE REALLY GOOD STORY NOW?)

Additionally, I have new screenshots of super clarity to share!

I'm not sure if it's just the corset fetishist/dyed hair enthusiast/former goth girl in me or not, but from a strictly aesthetic standpoint, I kind of dig Harley's costume for Arkham City.

SQUEE! Hugo Strange! Oh, he's so awesome. If you're unfamiliar with the character, I recommend you go here and here to read two of his most excellent comics appearances. He's a super badass, regardless of the silly neck beard. I love him a great deal.

And now for the bad news...

If you're planning on waiting to buy a cheaper second-hand copy of the game online or at your local games retailer, Warner Bros. has news for you: all of Catwoman's missions in Batman: Arkham City--which apparently make up about ten percent of the gameplay, are locked unless you have the 'First Purchaser' code, which is only included with a new copy of the game. If you buy Arkham City second hand, you'll have to pay for a pass key of your very own, or else just not play those missions.

As far as I know, this under-lock-and-key ten percent is supposed to be standard, not the downloadable content that I recently reported was theorized to be available. This sucks, especially if you're someone who's got just enough disposable cash to afford a used copy, but not the pass key.

Warner Bros. received a lot of praise for making Catwoman a playable character in Arkham City, and rightfully so, since blockbuster games with plot like this are pretty rarely have a playable female character, but putting her under lock and key is a really disappointing move.

Will that stop me from playing it? Well, no, but only because I have gamer friends who are planning on buying it and letting me take notes while they play through it.

More Arkham City content to follow in the coming weeks, you betcha.

I think the designer is telling us that Catwoman has boobs.

Aside from that and the high heels, I like this Catwoman costume as they made it look like she wears body armour, and hey, if Batman can wear then so can she. I am really looking forward to this game.

I have it pre-ordered, so I'll receive that first-purchaser code, but man oh man, that's some cheap move there on WB's part. It reminds me of some of the stuff that Bioware pulled with the DLC content on Mass Effect 2 and the Cerberus network. This just seems rather sucky and mistrustful on WB's part.

And at least Harley's costume isn't too stupid. Nothing can beat the original Bruce Timm design though, nothing.

Haha, I'm laughing at/agreeing with your comment about remembering she has an ass and [livejournal.com profile] big_wireds comment about this designer reminding us she has boobs. Yes, she does! :p

That's pretty crappy that they're cheating people who have to buy the game used. I am usually one of those people -- I wait a couple months so instead of paying $70 I pay $30-something. Someone needs to give WB a talk about playing nice.

Yeah, have them talk with Hasbro about playing nice with the fans. Hell, the Bronies are putting money together to get Studio B some nice gifts for all their hard work. I don't see anyone doing the same for the WB.

bad news

I do not understand why they do the whole woooo look two covers thing I mean if you are gonna do that then why can't they do one for each character? No offence but I can't afford to buy one anyway but at least give us a choice particularly when the art work looks so cool for all the characters.

I know what you mean by the Harley thing ^_^ I think it looks so cool its making me really look forward to playing the game and see what trouble she gets up to lol.

I will most defiantly be buying 2nd hand but I can live with it so long as it doesn't in pact on the story I will ;_; if it does though. I think its so wrong to do that to people I mean we pay money for the game either way they just don't like the fact that they make no money out of 2nd hand games :P

catwoman's eyes are creepily over large for her head and face.

i'm kind of convinced that the uncanny valley is part of why i hate videogames these days.

This is the back-up account for what I hope will be the Ultimate Catwoman Fan Blog--Dr. Von Fangirl on LiveJournal. You should go check it out over there. I much prefer the original article.
