Via the DC Comics App, we get our first look at Catwoman's new series, by Judd Winick and Guillem March, which will be hitting stands next Wednesday:

...hrm.

There are a couple of things that I, as a current comic reader, am totally over. One is full page panels that serve no narrative purpose. For those of you paying attention, DC Comics are now made up of only twenty pages of story and the majority of the books I've been picking up recently have often averaged five or six full page panels per issue, and several pages made up of three or four panels max. It's pretty frustrating to plunk down three or four bucks for what amounts to maybe ten solid pages of story.

The other thing that currently grinds my gears is, "My name is [real name]. I'm [alter ego]."

The Flash does it. Green Lantern does it. Numerous characters over the past few months have been driving me positively bonkers with it and now, Catwoman does it too. It is rapidly becoming one of my biggest pet peeves, even though I never really thought much about it before.

It's like...a clicky pen. A clicky pen doesn't bother you until you get a roommate who has one that she clicks incessantly for an hour straight, and then all you can think about is, stop clicking the fucking cliky pen or I am going to fucking lose it stop it stop it stopitstopitstopitSTOPIT!!

(And that's how you wind up with an irrational burning hatred of clicky pens, my friends.)

Anyway. Eye twitch inducing pet peeves aside, this, thus far, isn't much to write home about. It's a pretty standard opening. Beyond standard, actually; it reads like a typical primetime before-credits teaser for a TV pilot. This shouldn't be surprising, if you consider that DC seems to be treating their entire DCnU relaunch as a new-reader friendly series of books. Of course, that doesn't really take into account that everyone and their grandmother already knows who Catwoman is (consider: she's one of the only characters to wind up on Cosmopolitan magazine's "Favorite Superheroine" poll of a couple years back--alongside Wonder Woman and Elektra), but you know, whatever.

Presumably, Catwoman's origin will get a slight reworking with this version, so I guess (?) a re-introduction is in order, especially if you've waded through the tangle that it used to be. I just wish the preview were a bit meatier.

We'll see what the rest of the issue shapes up to be like; personally, I'm reserving judgment until the first storyarc is out and I can chew on it for awhile. What did you guys make of it?

STUFF AND NONSENSE

This is the back-up account for what I hope will be the Ultimate Catwoman Fan Blog--Dr. Von Fangirl on LiveJournal. You should go check it out over there. I much prefer the original article.
