If you're at work, don't even scroll down. The preview image isn't even work safe!

So, on the Batman: Year One DVD that hits stores next Tuesday, a Catwoman short in the tradition of the other DC Showcase shorts that accompanied some of the new DC animated films (like Green Arrow/Black Canary, Jonah Hex and The Spectre), written by Paul Dini will be included.

According to Dini's own LJ: No, I didn't work on the ultra-cool animated adaptation of the classic Batman story, though I DID script a fifteen minute bonus CATWOMAN short included in the package. I just saw the finished piece for the first time last night. It's quite amazing.

News has been spreading across the internet of that short's contents. Thus far, all we know is that Catwoman poses as a dancer at a gentlemen's club during a diamond heist, and does a strip tease during the course of the adventure.

There's certainly nothing wrong with being an exotic dancer (hi, I learned how to breathe fire from one--AND BY THE WAY, never teach a thirteen year old girl to breathe fire) and certainly nothing wrong with Catwoman being one, but in light of Catwoman's highly sexualized and objectified turn in Winick and March's Catwoman #1, it's a little troubling that in the very next high profile thing she's in after that hit shelves, she's losing her clothes again. If the scene serves a purpose and it's not meant solely for the titillation of the heterosexual male audience, thus turning Selina into an object for the second time this month, great! I'll love it! If not...

Well...I have my suspicions that she's using this as a means of escape/distraction, and the use of the whip during her act would leave everyone off guard for when she actually unleashes hell. The animation also looks like it's going to be really pretty when it's not in choppy gif form.

However, I may be in the minority when I say this, but as a longstanding fan of both characters, at no time should Catwoman have gotten her wardrobe tips from Vampirella. Because I love you and all, Vampi, but...no.

We'll see how this turns out.

In the meantime, I'm going to watch the official advance digital copy of Batman: Year One I've got, and be back later tonight with a review of how that turns out.

Please don't screw up one of the best Batman stories ever, please don't screw up one of the best Batman stories ever, please, please, pleeeeease.

A NOTE TO COMMENTERS: Please do not use slut shaming, whorephobic or misogynistic language when discussing these images. Examples would be words such as "whore", "slut", "tramp", "bitch" or anything similar. Do it and see how fast your ass gets two strikes. This is a safe space for everyone, treat it like one. If you wouldn't say it to a sweet little old lady's face after she gives you cookies and milk, don't even bring it here.

Yeah, you're about where I'm at right now. *sigh*

Dini is a good writer when it comes to animation pretty consistently, but I've still kinda been making this face for the past hour or so

... >_<

A stripper pole?! A FUCKING STRIPPER POLE?!

Are you seriously fucking kidding me here?!

She's not even wearing a bra underneath all that! I know women who have small cup sizes that still wear bras for support, and she's sporting a cup size as well endowed as Power Girl. This makes no sense, it's pure titillation and sexualization! Plus... zippers that close to the nipples? One little mishap on sensitive skin and she's going to be hurting.

*RAGE INCREASING*

Dini was partly behind this? Come on, dude! You worked with Bruce Timm, and you guys were able to write sexy into Catwoman without the stupid! This is just stupid!

Message to DC: I do not NEED nor WANT titillation to entice me to women characters. If the writing and the art are good, I will like the characters. Cheap, stupid, sexist tricks like this will not work on me and will instead spur me to anger.

Mini-Geek note: Catwoman DID have a crossover book with Vamperilla during the 90s, when she wore her giant grape outfit, and she still didn't dress like Vamperilla. There was a fair amount of lesbian undertones and subtext.

Hey, don't knock the pole, man. Those things take skill and highly developed muscles like you wouldn't believe. Most exotic dancers I know could crush someone using just their thighs :P

I know women who have small cup sizes that still wear bras for support, and she's sporting a cup size as well endowed as Power Girl.

I am reminded, very randomly, of something that my best friend, who doesn't even fill an A-cup, said to me the other day: "You're so supportive! Like a good bra! Except I don't really need a supportive bra...just a supportive friend."

But yeah. Anything bigger than a large B-cup--especially if it doesn't involve implants--is going to need serious support during athletic activities. When puberty hit me like a freight train at about eleven and a half, I had to give up jumping rope, baseball, running and a variety of my other favorite things because I could easily give myself a black eye if I didn't wear a good bra, and I was growing too fast to find one that would last longer than two weeks.

AND THAT'S THE STORY OF HOW I GOT TO BE A G-CUP BY FIFTEEN. GOODNIGHT EVERYBODY.

And re: your geek note: oh yes, I know. It took awhile, but I tracked down that issue and it now lives nestled safely in my Catwoman long box. Or maybe in the second Catwoman long box. I'll be scanning and reviewing it once I'm through with Catwoman's 90's solo series, because it takes place during the purple suit era. :D

Sorry, I didn't mean to insult stripper poles or the women who work on them. I almost got a job at a strip joint when no one else would hire me as the electrical apprentice I was, and well, yes, those ladies could dance.

It's just between this and Catwoman #1, it's like they're trying SO HARD to emphasize how sexy she is, and the Rage Ring jumped onto my finger before I knew it.

Yeah, it's been so long since I last read that, so I'm not sure how good or bad it is. I just remember it as being cheesecakey, but that's not a sure sign of something being bad.

Don't worry about it; I'm just trying to keep in mind that people of all kinds can see this blog, sex workers of various sorts included, and they have few enough safe spaces as it is. Though I wasn't insulted, I can easily imagine someone else's feelings on the matter being different; better to nip that in the bud :)

I can't really attest to the accuracy of this statement, but apparently, in the actual meeting about Red Hoods and the Outlaws #1, someone drew attention to the fact that there seemed to be a belief that strong female character=woman who has lots of sex. (Beware misogynist language in the quotes)

Now, the objectors certainly weren't right to suggest that Starfire's openness to sexuality should be the result of her time as a sex slave, but neither was the writer correct in thinking that sexual assertiveness is a personality. There were so many better ways to get sexy-and-strong across, but...you know...men don't really have to worry about being sexual objects as much as women do, so they sometimes don't see the objectification as clearly as some of us can. Le sigh.

I was listening to 3 Chicks review comics:

http://1979semifinalist.podomatic.com/

And they were discussing this as part of discussing the sexism in comics, and one thing they pointed out was that at no time did we see that exchange with Roy Harper from Starfire's POV. There was nothing in her thoughts about how she thought Roy was a fine hunk of man, especially with the way he was drawn. It was just this stupid, emotionless detachment and desire for sex. That's not empowering, as it seems to suggest that women have no desire for sex, and yet women can't have a desire for sex else the whore/virgin complex will come crashing down on their heads.

And yeah, I'll do better to, well, better myself on helping contribute and making this a safe space to speak for everyone. My bad, I fudged up.

maybe i'm crazy, but as a heterosexual male, i can tell ya right out that if this is for the titillation of hetero-males, it does kind of a lousy job of it.

then again, strippers and strip teases have never exactly held my interest.

either way, i'm kind of exceedingly unimpressed by this.

plus i am willing to bet BIG money that she's just doing this to distract some evil mobster character (because all men are turned into buffoons by tits, cause, as we all know, men are just so very, very stupid) and she ends up grabbing him by the neck with the whip. this kind of thing is an uninteresting cliche.

or, to put it more simply: fuck this noise.

Nobody ever said DC was in touch with its actual audience, Dave, just the audience it thinks it has. Hell, I'm into girls, and this...really ain't doin' it for me.

You won't get me or anyone else to take that bet, I'm sure, since that's what I suspect as well. SIGH.

We'll see how it goes, though, but hahahaha, a wait-and-see attitude certainly didn't help with Catwoman #1. -.-;

Just whhhhhhy??? There is no way in reality her boobies would stay in that firkin' suit if she did that ;_; This just reminds me of Emma Frost from Marvel all over again :(

Don't get me wrong I'm all up for people doing as they please but if there is no point to this scene I will not be impressed at all.

And Fire breathing? cool beans! Can you teach me?

First, welcome to the blog! Hi and some junk! :D Always nice to see new people dropping in! I hope you stick around to talk comics!

I'm not sure if you're aware of it yet, but this kind of gratuitous partial nudity is...kind of not new--and it's especially not new right now. Have you been keeping up with the whole kerfuffle over Catwoman #1? If not, I recommend you check out here, here to see what's up.

I'm reluctant to teach fire breathing over the internet (or at all anymore--I'm about ten years out of practice nowadays) but if you want to learn how to use a bullwhip, pick a lock using nothing but an ink pen and a hairpin, case a museum, flip someone onto their back while they've got you pinned using nothing but your heels or escape from handcuffs...then I'm your girl!

I suppose I could also muster up a tutorial on hot wiring cars, but that's kind of messy and I haven't done it in a few years. :)

(And before you ask: I have no criminal background, I was just an incredibly curious teenager who wanted to learn interesting skills and who had really interesting friends.)

Hi sorry for being so rude and not introducing myself ~^_^~ I will indeed I love comics! They have been a part of my life since I was a very young child do they really are a big part of my life.

0_o I see well to be honest I'm a little behind the times with DC since my dad was into marvel it was pretty much my staple diet as a child and teen. I just read those two posts and all I can say is wow I don't think I want to read it to be honest. I am quite a liberal gal don't get me wrong but well I just don't see the point in that at all lol and all the points you made are pretty much what popped into my head when I saw the images you put up in the entry.

Those sounds like fun! I'm more than willing to learn new and interesting things I just wish I had something I could teach you now ;_;

I never assumed you did hun I try not to make assumptions if I can help it ;)

Oh awesome! I always welcome everyone whether they're just a little behind or a complete n00b, and do my best to teach and inform. There are scans to catch up on if you like (just hit the scans!scans!scans! tag), and if you're relatively new to the world of DC--and to Catwoman--may I recommend checking out her complete definitive origin? That's a really good place to start if you want to get caught up without too much hassle. :D

And don't worry about it; just being a commenter already means you've paid your dues, as far as I'm concerned.

Enjoy your time here!

^_^ Can't wait to see you're review.

Thank you please excuse the terrible reviewing skills I have never reviewed anything in my life and I'm not keen on giving the whole plot away in case someone hasn't read it yet. I've just finished reading them I only have one left to go now and I'm hoping to get the reviews up for the others soon.
